Privacy Policy for NRK Subtitle Translator

This Privacy Policy describes how the NRK Subtitle Translator browser extension collects, uses, and discloses information, and what choices you have with respect to the information.
1. What Data We Collect
User Preferences
- Translation enable/disable setting
- Target language preference
- Dual subtitle mode preference
- User email address (optional, for API quota tracking)
Technical Data
- IP Address: We temporarily process your public IP address to manage daily translation quotas.
- Subtitle Text: The text of the subtitles you are viewing is captured for translation.
2. How We Use Information
Translation Services
- Subtitle Text: The subtitle text is sent to the MyMemory Translation API (provided by Translated S.r.l.) to retrieve the translation in your selected language. It is not permanently stored by our extension.
- Email Address: If you provide an email address, it is sent to the MyMemory Translation API to associate your translation usage with your personal daily quota (50,000 characters/day). This allows for higher usage limits compared to anonymous usage.
Quota Management
IP Address: Your IP address is checked via Ipify (api.ipify.org) to detect if your network location has changed. This allows us to reset your daily quota tracking locally if you move to a new network, ensuring you can continue using the service. Your IP address is processed locally for this logic and is not permanently stored on our servers.
3. Data Storage
Local Storage
We use your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.sync and chrome.storage.local) to save your preferences and temporary state:
- Your "Translation Enabled" status.
- Your selected "Target Language".
- Your "Dual Subtitle Mode" preference.
- Your provided Email Address (if any).
- The last known IP address (stored locally only) to detect changes.
- A timestamp if your daily quota has been exceeded.
This data is stored locally on your device (and synced via your Chrome account if enabled) and is not sent to any servers owned by us.
4. Third-Party Services
This extension interacts with the following third-party services:
- MyMemory (Translated S.r.l.): Used for providing translations.

5. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by updating the date at the top of this policy.
